A railroad-tie path traverses the entire width of the property, and the enlarged entryway/ driveway is made of concrete pavers and permeable Grasscrete. Over time, however, Sari let another vision for her lawn take form, one which was inspired by the book Last Child in the Woods and its notion that unstructured outdoor play is fantastic for children' development. With the help of landscape designer Samantha Gore, Sari Gave the hillside space an enchanting new look, adding willow tunnelstree stumps, and a gigantic nest perched in a tree to promote exploration. "When children come over, I see that this'holy smokes' reaction in their eyes," Sari says. "They can't believe they could really dig climb."
Since everything is built from natural materials rather than chunky Plastic, the garden is still sophisticated enough for mature dinner parties. And as her children (now totaling three--ranging from ages 2 to 8) get older, Sari has grown to love the elasticity of the design. The youngsters often drape climbing constructions with cloth for forts. Hideout spots twice as reading nooks. "Eventually, I could even get a little time with a book in the willow nest myself," she states. "But we're a ways off from this!"A patch of artificial turf softens a concrete patio while stumps make a seating area for both pretend tea parties and bigger gatherings. "When we entertain, the kids sit ," Sari says. "They receive their own room, but they are still in our eyesight."
A small willow tunnel adds a secret-garden quality to a path. "Tunnels can be created out of many things," says Gore. "Let a tree or tree grow to the floor and cut the undergrowth. Or weave willow wisps or green cuttings in an acacia or a grapevine."Gore loves tree trunks for children's outdoor spaces, both since they are a natural repurposed material and because"they can be rearranged endlessly," she states. From the front yard, the Lehrer kids use them as oversized steppingstones.
