Remodeled this picture of a two-story Diamond Heights Eichler using a steep hillside garden. The challenge: producing flat, usable outdoor living spaces by constructing terraces and stairs connecting the different levels. With a focus on texture, bold forms, and colors, this backyard softens the angular landscape design and supplies the garden a more contemporary feeling.

The clients of landscape designer Fiona Green of Green Tree Garden Design formerly lived in the Middle East and desired their backyard to reflect the designs of the former home. Following the classic essentials of Islamic garden design, Green made a courtyard with a water feature in one corner with a new summerhouse at the opposite corner, which can be viewed from the courtyard seating area. Green finished the renovation by replacing the plants with specimens offering year-round jewel-tone colors, as well as structure and scent.

Backyard Upgrades

The pool and outdoor action zones are made with an emphasis on the horizontal lines of their house, maintaining a very low profile so that nothing beats that fabulous view.

As time passes, though, Sari allow another vision for her yard take shape, one that was inspired by the book Last Child in the Woods and its own notion that unstructured outdoor play is fantastic for children' development. And as her children (now totaling three--ranging from ages 2 to 8) get older, Sari has grown to appreciate the elasticity of the design. The kids often drape climbing structures with cloth for forts. Hideout spots twice as reading nooks. "But we're a ways away from that!"

A patch of artificial turf softens a concrete patio while stumps create a seating area for both pretend tea parties and larger gatherings. "When we entertain, the children sit ," Sari states. "They get their own room, but they're still in our eyesight."

A little willow tunnel provides a secret-garden caliber to a path. "Tunnels can be created from many matters," says Gore. "Let a shrub or tree grow to the floor and cut the undergrowth. Or weave willow wisps or green cuttings in an acacia or a grapevine."

Gore enjoys tree trunks for children's outdoor spaces, both because they're a natural repurposed material and because"they can be swiped endlessly," she says. From the front yard, the Lehrer kids use them as oversized steppingstones.
