A railroad-tie path traverses the whole width of the estate, and the enlarged entryway/ driveway is constructed from concrete pavers and permeable Grasscrete. The pool and outdoor action zones are built with an emphasis on the horizontal lines of the house, maintaining a very low profile so that nothing obstructs that fabulous view.

Over time, however, Sari let a different vision for her lawn take form, one which was motivated by the publication Last Child in the Woods and its own notion that unstructured outdoor play is good for kids' development. With the help of landscape designer Samantha Gore, Sari Gave the hillside space an enchanting new appearance, adding willow tunnels, tree stumps, and a colossal nest perched in a tree to promote exploration. "When children come over, I visit that this'holy smokes' response in their own eyes," Sari says. "They can't believe they can really dig climb."

Since everything is built from natural materials rather than chunky Plastic, the backyard is still sophisticated enough for mature dinner parties. And as her kids (now totaling three--ranging from ages 2 to 8) get old, Sari has grown to appreciate the elasticity of the design. The kids often drape climbing constructions with cloth for temples. Hideout spots twice as reading nooks. "Eventually, I might also get a little time with a publication from the willow nest myself," she states. "But we're a ways away from this!"

A patch of artificial turf softens a concrete terrace while stumps make a seating area for both pretend tea parties and bigger gatherings. "When we entertain, the kids sit here," Sari says. "They receive their own space, but they are still in our eyesight."

A little willow tunnel provides a secret-garden caliber to a course. "Tunnels can be made out of many matters," says Gore. "Let a tree or tree grow to the floor and trim the undergrowth.
