Green completed the renovation by replacing the crops with specimens that offer yearlong jewel-tone colours, in addition to structure and odor.

Tasked with respecting the 1959 mid-century contemporary roots of the home, (fer) studio, LLP oversaw site enhancements of a Sherman Oaks hilltop house possessed by Davis Factor, photographer and founder of Smashbox. Preserving its post-and-beam structure and rhythm, (fer) studio added a seat, cabana, and a gym with a private patio serving the master suite. On the way, Factor bought the property next door and his residence was expanded to incorporate a 2,700-square-foot guest house.

Along with landscape architect Victoria Pakshong of [place] landscape collaborative, (fer) studio made a strategy for the enlarged house's natural upslope. A railroad-tie path traverses the entire width of the property, and the enlarged entryway/ driveway is made of concrete pavers and permeable Grasscrete. The pool and outside action zones are built with an emphasis on the horizontal lines of their property, maintaining a low profile so that nothing obstructs that fabulous view.

Over time, though, Sari let another vision for her yard take shape, one which was motivated by the book Last Child in the Woods and its own notion that unstructured outdoor play is good for children' development. With the help of landscape designer Samantha Gore, Sari Gave the hillside area an enchanting new appearance, adding willow tunnels, tree stumps, and a gigantic nest perched in a tree to encourage exploration. Since everything is built from natural materials rather than chunky Plastic, the backyard is still sophisticated enough for mature dinner parties. The kids often drape climbing structures with cloth for temples. Hideout spots double as reading nooks. "Eventually, I could also get a little time with a publication from the willow nest myself," she states. "But we are a ways off from this!"

"When we entertain, the children sit ," Sari says. "They get their own space, but they're still in our sight."

A small willow tunnel provides a secret-garden caliber to some path. "Tunnels can be created out of many things," says Gore. "Let a tree or tree grow into the ground and trim back the undergrowth. Or weave willow wisps or green cuttings in an acacia or a grapevine."

Gore loves tree trunks for children's outdoor spaces, both because they are a natural repurposed material and because"they can be swiped endlessly," she says. From the front yard, the Lehrer children use them as oversize steppingstones.
