The clients of landscape designer Fiona Green of Green Tree Garden Design previously lived in the Middle East and desired their own English garden to reflect the designs of the former home. Following the classic essentials of Islamic garden design, Green made a courtyard with a water feature in 1 corner with a fresh summerhouse in the opposite corner, which may be seen from the courtyard seating area. A railroad-tie path traverses the entire width of the property, and also the enlarged entryway/ driveway is constructed of concrete pavers and permeable Grasscrete. A small willow tunnel adds a secret-garden caliber to some path. "Tunnels can be made from many things," says Gore. "Let a shrub or tree grow to the floor and cut back the undergrowth.

Gore loves tree trunks for children's outdoor spaces, both because they are a natural repurposed material and because"they can be swiped endlessly," she states. From the front yard, the Lehrer children use them as oversize steppingstones.
