As time passes, though, Sari let another vision for her yard take form, one which was inspired by the book Last Child in the Woods and its own notion that unstructured outdoor play is fantastic for children' development. Gave the hillside space an enchanting new appearance, adding willow tunnelstree stumps, and a gigantic nest perched in a tree to encourage exploration. "When children come over, I visit that this'holy smokes' reaction in their eyes," Sari says. "They can't believe they can really dig and climb."

Since everything is built from natural materials rather than chunky Plastic, the garden is still complicated enough for mature dinner parties. And as her children (now totaling three--ranging from ages 2 to 8) get old, Sari has grown to appreciate the elasticity of the design. The youngsters often drape climbing constructions with cloth for temples. Hideout spots twice as reading nooks. "But we're a ways away from that!"

A patch of artificial turf softens a concrete patio while stumps make a seating area for both pretend tea parties and larger gatherings. "When we entertain, the kids sit here," Sari states. "They get their own space, but they are still in our eyesight."

A little willow tunnel adds a secret-garden quality to some path. "Tunnels can be made from several things," says Gore. "Let a tree or tree grow into the floor and trim the undergrowth.

Gore enjoys tree trunks for children's outdoor spaces, both because they're a natural repurposed material and because"they could be rearranged endlessly," she states. In the front lawn, the Lehrer children use them as oversized steppingstones.
