The owners of this Boston area property wanted to extend their Living space to the exterior while enjoying the gorgeous woodland setting at easy reach from the rear door. Landscape designers A Blade of Grass reconfigured the rear porch to step down to an adjacent raised bluestone patio. The designer produced a string of outdoor rooms that transition from a highly developed area to more naturalized native plantings, including an outdoor fireplace, a koi pond, a shade garden, and irregular bluestone paths.

A massive water basin is the centerpiece of the Islamic-style courtyard garden in Hertfordshire, England. The clients of landscape designer Fiona Green of Green Tree Garden Design previously resided in the Middle East and wanted their own backyard to reflect the styles of the former home. Following the classic principles of Islamic garden design, Green made a courtyard with a water feature in 1 corner with a fresh summerhouse in the opposite corner, which may be viewed from the courtyard seating area. Maintaining its post-and-beam structure and rhythm, (fer) studio inserted a carport, cabana, and a gym with a private patio serving the master suite. On the way, Factor bought the property next door and his home was expanded to incorporate a 2,700-square-foot guest home.

Together with landscape architect Victoria Pakshong of [place] picture collaborative, (fer) studio made a strategy for the enlarged house's natural upslope. A railroad-tie path traverses the whole width of the property, and the enlarged entryway/ driveway is constructed of concrete pavers and permeable Grasscrete. The pool and outdoor activity zones are built with an emphasis on the horizontal lines of the house, keeping a low profile so that nothing obstructs that amazing view.

Over time, though, Sari allow a different vision for her yard take form, one which was inspired by the book Last Child in the Woods and its own notion that unstructured outdoor play is good for kids' development. A little willow tunnel adds a secret-garden caliber to a course. "Tunnels can be made out of several matters," says Gore. "Let a shrub or tree grow into the floor and cut back the undergrowth. Or weave willow wisps or green cuttings in an acacia or a grapevine."

Gore loves tree trunks for children's outdoor spaces, both since they are a natural repurposed material and since"they can be swiped endlessly," she states. From the front yard, the Lehrer children use them as oversized steppingstones.
