Over time, though, Sari let a different vision for her lawn take shape, one that was motivated by the book Last Child in the Woods and its notion that unstructured outdoor play is fantastic for kids' development. Gore loves tree trunks for children's outdoor spaces, both since they're a natural repurposed material and because"they can be rearranged endlessly," she says. In the front lawn, the Lehrer kids use them as oversized steppingstones.
