The clients of landscape designer Fiona Green of Green Tree Garden Design formerly lived in the Middle East and wanted their own backyard to reflect the designs of their former home. On the way, Factor bought the house next door and his home was expanded to include a 2,700-square-foot guest house.

Along with landscape architect Victoria Pakshong of [place] landscape collaborative, (fer) studio made a plan for the enlarged property's natural upslope. A railroad-tie path traverses the whole width of the estate, and the enlarged entryway/ driveway is made from concrete pavers and permeable Grasscrete. The pool and outside activity zones are made with an emphasis on the horizontal lines of their house, keeping a low profile so that nothing beats that amazing view.

A small willow tunnel provides a secret-garden caliber to some course. "Tunnels can be made out of several things," says Gore. "Let a shrub or tree grow to the floor and cut back the undergrowth. Or weave willow wisps or green cuttings from an acacia or a grapevine."

Gore enjoys tree trunks for children's outdoor spaces, both because they are a natural repurposed material and because"they could be swiped endlessly," she says. From the front yard, the Lehrer children use them as oversized steppingstones.
