A railroad-tie path traverses the entire width of the estate, and the enlarged entryway/ driveway is made from concrete pavers and permeable Grasscrete. The pool and outside action zones are made with an emphasis on the flat lines of their property, keeping a low profile so that nothing beats that fabulous view.

Over time, however, Sari let another vision for her yard take form, one which was inspired by the publication Last Child in the Woods and its notion that unstructured outdoor play is good for children' development. With the Support of landscape designer Samantha Gore, Sari Gave the hillside area an enchanting new look, adding willow tunnelstree stumps, and a gigantic nest perched in a tree to promote exploration. "When kids come over, I see this'holy smokes' response in their eyes," Sari states. "They can't believe they can really dig climb."

Since everything is constructed from natural materials rather than chunky Plastic, the garden is still complicated enough for mature dinner parties. And as her kids (now totaling three--ranging from ages 2 to 8) get older, Sari has grown to love the elasticity of the design. The kids often drape climbing constructions with fabric for temples. Hideout spots twice as reading nooks. "Finally, I could also get a little time with a book in the willow nest myself," she says. "But we're a ways off from that!"

A patch of artificial turf softens a concrete patio while stumps create a seating area for both pretend tea parties and larger parties. "When we entertain, the kids sit ," Sari says. "They receive their own space, but they're still in our eyesight."

A little willow tunnel provides a secret-garden caliber to some path. "Tunnels can be created out of several matters," says Gore. "Let a tree or tree grow into the floor and cut the undergrowth. Or weave willow wisps or green cuttings in an acacia or a grapevine."

Gore enjoys tree trunks for children's outdoor spaces, both since they are a natural repurposed material and since"they can be rearranged endlessly," she states. From the front lawn, the Lehrer children use them as oversized steppingstones.
