The owners of the Boston area property wanted to stretch their Living room to the outside while enjoying the gorgeous woodland setting at easy access from the back door. Landscape painters A Blade of Grass reconfigured the back porch to step down to an adjacent raised bluestone patio. The designer produced a series of outdoor rooms that transition from an extremely developed area to more naturalized native plantings, such as an outdoor fireplace, a koi pond, a shade garden, and irregular bluestone paths.

The clients of landscape designer Fiona Green of Green Tree Garden Design formerly lived in the Middle East and desired their backyard to reflect the styles of the former home. Following the traditional essentials of Islamic garden design, Green made a courtyard with a water feature in 1 corner with a new summerhouse at the opposite corner, which may be seen from the courtyard seating area. Over time, however, Sari let a different vision for her yard take form, one that was inspired by the publication Last Child in the Woods and its notion that unstructured outdoor play is fantastic for kids' development. Gave the hillside area an enchanting new look, adding willow tunnelstree stumps, and a gigantic nest perched in a tree to promote exploration. "When kids come over, I visit that this'holy smokes' response in their eyes," Sari states. "They can not believe they can definitely dig climb."

Since everything is constructed from natural materials rather than chunky Plastic, the garden is still sophisticated enough for mature dinner parties. And as her kids (now totaling three--ranging from ages 2 to 8) get older, Sari has grown to appreciate the elasticity of the design. The kids often drape climbing constructions with fabric for temples. Hideout spots double as reading nooks. "Eventually, I could even get a little time with a publication in the willow nest myself," she says. "But we're a ways away from this!"

A patch of artificial turf softens a concrete patio while stumps make a seating space for both pretend tea parties and bigger gatherings. "When we entertain, the children sit here," Sari says. "They get their own room, but they're still in our eyesight."

A little willow tunnel adds a secret-garden quality to some path. "Tunnels can be created from several matters," says Gore. "Let a shrub or tree grow to the floor and cut back the undergrowth. Or weave willow wisps or green cuttings from an acacia or a grapevine."

Gore enjoys tree trunks for children's outdoor spaces, both because they're a natural repurposed material and because"they can be swiped endlessly," she says. From the front lawn, the Lehrer children use them as oversized steppingstones.
