As time passes, however, Sari allow a different vision for her yard take shape, one that was motivated by the book Last Child in the Woods and its own notion that unstructured outdoor play is fantastic for kids' development. A little willow tunnel provides a secret-garden quality to some course. "Tunnels can be created out of many matters," says Gore. "Let a shrub or tree grow into the floor and cut back the undergrowth. Or weave willow wisps or green cuttings from an acacia or a grapevine."Gore loves tree trunks for children's outdoor spaces, both since they are a natural repurposed material and since"they could be swiped endlessly," she says. From the front yard, the Lehrer children use them as oversize steppingstones.
