The challenge: producing horizontal, usable outdoor living spaces by constructing terraces and stairs connecting the various levels. With a focus on texture, bold forms, and colors, this garden calms the angular landscape architecture and supplies the backyard a more modern feeling.

The owners of this Boston area property wanted to extend their Living room to the outside while enjoying the gorgeous woodland setting at easy access from the back door. Landscape designers A Blade of Grass reconfigured the back porch to measure down to an adjacent raised bluestone patio. The designer created a string of outdoor rooms that transition from a highly developed area to more naturalized native plantings, such as an outdoor fireplace, a koi pond, a shade garden, and irregular bluestone paths.

The clients of landscape designer Fiona Green of Green Tree Garden Design formerly resided in the Middle East and wanted their backyard to reflect the styles of the former home. Over time, though, Sari let another vision for her lawn take shape, one that was motivated by the book Last Child in the Woods and its own notion that unstructured outdoor play is good for children' development. With the help of landscape designer Samantha Gore, Sari Gave the hillside space an enchanting new look, adding willow tunnelstree stumps, and a colossal nest perched in a tree to encourage exploration. "When children come over, I visit that this'holy smokes' response in their eyes," Sari says. "They can not believe they can definitely dig and climb."

Since everything is constructed from natural materials rather than chunky Plastic, the garden is still complicated enough for adult dinner parties. And as her children (now totaling three--ranging from ages 2 to 8) get old, Sari has grown to love the stretchiness of the plan. The kids often drape climbing structures with fabric for forts. Hideout spots double as reading nooks. "But we're a long way away from this!"

"When we entertain, the children sit here," Sari says. "They get their own space, but they're still in our eyesight."

A small willow tunnel provides a secret-garden quality to a path. "Tunnels can be created out of many things," says Gore. "Let a tree or tree grow to the ground and cut the undergrowth. Or weave willow wisps or green cuttings from an acacia or a grapevine."

Gore loves tree trunks for children's outdoor spaces, both since they're a natural repurposed material and because"they could be rearranged endlessly," she says. From the front lawn, the Lehrer children use them as oversized steppingstones.
