The customers of landscape designer Fiona Green of Green Tree Garden Design previously resided in the Middle East and wanted their backyard to reflect the designs of their former home. Tasked with respecting the 1959 mid-century contemporary origins of the home, (fer) studio, LLP oversaw website enhancements of a Sherman Oaks hilltop home owned by Davis Factor, photographer and creator of Smashbox. Maintaining its post-and-beam structure and rhythm, (fer) studio added a seat, cabana, and a gym with a personal patio serving the master suite. Along the way, Factor purchased the property next door and his home was expanded to incorporate a 2,700-square-foot guest home.

Together with landscape architect Victoria Pakshong of [place] landscape collaborative, (fer) studio designed a strategy for the enlarged property's natural upslope. A railroad-tie path traverses the entire width of the property, and the enlarged entryway/ driveway is constructed from concrete pavers and permeable Grasscrete. The pool and outside activity zones are built with an emphasis on the horizontal lines of the property, keeping a very low profile so that nothing beats that amazing view.

Over time, though, Sari allow a different vision for her lawn take form, one which was motivated by the book Last Child in the Woods and its notion that unstructured outdoor play is good for children' development. A little willow tunnel adds a secret-garden quality to a course. "Tunnels can be created out of several matters," says Gore. "Let a shrub or tree grow to the ground and trim the undergrowth. Or weave willow wisps or green cuttings from an acacia or a grapevine."

Gore loves tree trunks for children's outdoor spaces, both since they are a natural repurposed material and because"they could be rearranged endlessly," she states. From the front lawn, the Lehrer children use them as oversize steppingstones.
