The challenge: creating horizontal, usable outdoor living spaces by building terraces and stairs linking the different levels. With an emphasis on texture, bold forms, and colors, this backyard calms the angular landscape design and gives the backyard a more modern feeling.

The owners of the Boston area property wanted to extend their Living room to the outside whilst enjoying the gorgeous woodland setting at easy access from the rear door. Landscape painters A Blade of Grass reconfigured the rear porch to step down to an adjacent raised bluestone patio. The designer created a string of outdoor rooms which transition from a highly developed space to more naturalized native plantings, including an outdoor fireplace, a koi pond, a shade garden, and irregular bluestone paths.

The clients of landscape designer Fiona Green of Green Tree Garden Design formerly lived in the Middle East and desired their backyard to reflect the styles of their former home. Along the way, Factor purchased the property next door and his residence was expanded to incorporate a 2,700-square-foot guest house.

Together with landscape architect Victoria Pakshong of [place] picture collaborative, (fer) studio designed a strategy for its enlarged property's natural upslope. A railroad-tie path traverses the whole width of the property, and the enlarged entryway/ driveway is made from concrete pavers and permeable Grasscrete. The pool and outdoor action zones are made with an emphasis on the horizontal lines of their property, maintaining a very low profile so that nothing obstructs that fabulous view.
