A little willow tunnel adds a secret-garden quality to some course. "Tunnels can be created out of several things," says Gore. "Let a shrub or tree grow into the floor and trim the undergrowth.

Gore loves tree trunks for children's outdoor spaces, both since they're a natural repurposed material and because"they could be swiped endlessly," she says. From the front lawn, the Lehrer kids use them as oversize steppingstones.
